St. Mary’s University Summer 2023 Drone Camp Experience: A TA’s Perspective
This past summer, I volunteered to be a teacher’s assistant for one of the drone camps that was
being offered here at St. Mary’s University. This was my first time volunteering for one of our
summer drone camps. I was extremely interested in volunteering because I have grown really
close to the drone community over the years that I have been at St. Mary’s. I knew it would be an
amazing opportunity to educate others and share with them the joys of drone flying. I would say
that it was a really great experience. It felt very fulfilling to educate young students on a subject
that I am so passionate about.
The target audience for the drone summer camp was high school students from the San Antonio
area. Students who were interested had to apply as there were a limited number of slots. Most of
the students that we asked said that they heard about the camp from their parents and friends of
their parents.
Something that was interesting to me was that quite a few of the students already knew each
other. Whether it was from school or their parents were friends, I think it worked out well for
them to be comfortable working together. A daily routine was developed after the first day of
getting to know each other.
Through the camp, the students participated in a variety of activities. Before being able to fly the
drones outside, the students had to earn their TRUST certificates. To begin this process, the
students were given a short presentation with general information that they would need to know
to get their TRUST certificate or recreational license. This is a short knowledge test just to make
sure that pilots know what to do and what is safe while flying outside.
Once the students passed their recreational test they would be ready to get out and start flying!
The students would take turns in groups flying outside with the supervision of myself or Ms.
Nicole Webb. The drones that we introduced them to for outside flight were the DJI Mini 3 Pro.
The aspect of the camp that was really amazing was seeing how great the students did after just
learning a few hours prior and how their skills progressed over the week.
Overall, I would say that the camp was a success! The students enjoyed getting out and
being able to participate in activities that they wouldn’t get to participate in on a day-to-day
basis. It was all really amazing to see. I would absolutely be thrilled to volunteer in future drone
camps, and I am extremely honored and delighted to have volunteered this time around
